JWSS SCIENCE PROGRAMME
Guided by Science Curriculum Framework, the Science Prograamme at Jurong West Secondary School is committed to developing every student with a strong scientific foundation for life, future learning, citizenship and work.
Recognising that every student has different strengths, interests and aspirations, we provide a progressive and engaging curriculum that develops both scientific understanding and the Practices of Science (POS). Through inquiry-based learning, students are encouraged to ask meaningful questions, investigate authentic problems, analyse evidence, communicate their ideas, and think critically and creatively. In doing so, they develop essential 21st Century Competencies alongside a deeper appreciation that science is not merely a body of knowledge, but a way of thinking and doing.
To empower students to become confident learners and responsible citizens, we intentionally design authentic learning experiences that position them as active inquirers with a spirit of innovation. Beyond the classroom, students participate in a range of enrichment programmes that spark curiosity, deepen their understanding of scientific phenomena, and encourage them to explore real-world issues through Science, Technology, Society and the Environment (STSE). These experiences inspire students to apply their learning meaningfully and develop innovative solutions to challenges in an ever-changing world.

Learning beyond the Classroom, Bringing Science to Life

Secondary 1 Science Integrated Activity (Extension)
Our Secondary 1 students participated in an Integrated Activity that extended their learning beyond the classroom by applying their understanding of separation techniques to an authentic real-world context.
Through the activity, students gained a deeper appreciation of water sustainability and the role of science in addressing global water challenges. They strengthened their inquiry and research skills by investigating the causes of water pollution and exploring methods of obtaining potable water.de the image.
As students designed and refined a water purification device, they developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills by selecting suitable materials, justifying their design choices, and evaluating the effectiveness of their device. Working collaboratively also enhanced their communication and teamwork skills.
Overall, the activity fostered scientific curiosity, creativity and resilience, while helping students appreciate the relevance of science in solving real-world problems and promoting environmental sustainability.

Science Competitions (Exploration)
Our students actively pursued their passion for Science and STEM through participation in a range of national and international competitions. These included the Singapore Junior Biology Olympiad, Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad, Singapore Junior Physics Olympiad, the ignITE Skills Challenge, and the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS).
Through these platforms, students were challenged to apply scientific concepts beyond the classroom, develop critical and analytical thinking skills, and deepen their understanding of real-world applications of science. The competitions also provided valuable opportunities for students to collaborate with peers, demonstrate creativity in problem-solving, and build resilience when tackling unfamiliar challenges.

Secondary 3 Science Learning Journey (Extension)
Our Secondary 3 students embarked on an enriching Science Learning Journey designed to deepen their understanding of scientific concepts through authentic, real-world experiences. Students visited one of four learning sites, each offering unique insights into different fields of science:
· Co+Nut+Ink – Students explored the science behind food innovation and sustainability, learning how natural ingredients can be transformed into eco-friendly products.
· Scentopia – Through a personalised fragrance-making experience, students gained an appreciation of the chemistry behind scents and essential oils while discovering how science and creativity come together.
· iFLY Singapore – Students experienced the physics of flight firsthand, learning about forces such as gravity and air resistance and how these principles enable indoor skydiving.
· Ecoponics – Students learnt about urban farming and sustainable agriculture, gaining insights into innovative farming technologies and the importance of food security in an increasingly urbanised world.
These immersive experiences allowed students to connect classroom learning to practical applications and emerging industries. They encouraged critical thinking about sustainability and highlighted science's role in shaping a better future. The learning journey fostered scientific literacy, curiosity, and responsible citizenship, inspiring a lifelong appreciation for science beyond the school walls.

Innovation JeWel: STEM in Action, Change in Motion (Mastery)
Our students explored the real-world applications of STEM and its role in driving innovation. They discovered how MRI technology supports medical diagnostics, learned about water and waste management at the Sustainable Singapore Gallery, witnessed recycled plastic being transformed into practical products, and explored vertical farming and modern agriculture for sustainable urban food production.
JeWel students turned their curiosity and creativity into scientific solutions and showcased their projects in national platforms such as the A*STAR-VJC Science Fair, the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award, and the Singapore Science Engineering Fair. They gained valuable exposure, developed essential skills, and have been recognised with awards such as the Judges’ Award, Merit, and Credit Awards.
